Can SW Agreeable Gray work in my home?

Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray doesn't work in every home, and this paint color's popularity is misleading. I've seen hundreds of homes in my career where a client painted their home SW Agreeable Gray before contacting me, and it made the space feel darker, tend to lean on the cool side of grays, especially when the lighting is an issue. The overall ambiance was heavier than expected.

Most of the time, it's lighting, the interior design layout of your home, and the fixed elements in your home that will dictate if SW Agreeable Gray is the right paint color for your home.  For example, suppose you're considering painting the kitchen cabinets a warm gray, and your kitchen countertops are off-white with minimal movement. In that case, chances are SW Agreeable Gray will create a modern, warm ambiance in your kitchen. However, if you have a home that is North facing and natural lighting is not adequate, then don't be surprised SW Agreeable looks darker and cooler than you expected it to be.

Is Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray the right undertone for your home?

SW Agreeable Gray is not the right undertone for your home if you don't receive proper natural or artificial lighting. The type of fixed elements in your home will also dictate if SW Agreeable Gray will or will not work.

For example, if you have dark cherry wood flooring or flooring with red undertones, it will make SW Agreeable Gray look warmer than it is, look more green and pull out the green-gray undertones. Please be careful when selecting warm gray for your home or space. However, if you have warm neutral flooring, then chances are SW Agreeable Gray will pair and contrast beautifully assuming you have the proper lighting in your home or space.

Please be careful with popular online or magazine paint colors as it's often not the right paint color for your home. Get a sample, and test SW Agreeable Gray with the other paint colors and colors you have in your home. I don't want you to make a costly mistake.

Next, I'm going to share with you a few tips that you should know about Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray.

SW Agreeable Gray Design Tip 1: Exterior Paint Color

If you're thinking about painting the exterior of your home with SW Agreeable Gray you need to be aware that it will look completely different than what it looks like in the interior of the home.

It's important to note that the exterior paint color will be five times brighter and lighter as the exterior of the home receives far more natural lighting than the interior of a home. SW Agreeable Gray doesn't look like a gray paint color instead it looks like a greige. What is a greige? It's a mix of beige and gray. SW Agreeable Gray will not look gray but like a gray beige without yellow undertones to keep it simple.

Before deciding if SW Agreeable Gray is the right paint color for the exterior of your home it's important you make sure it pairs with the fixed elements of your home. For example if you have exterior stones that lean as a cool gray then don't be surprised if SW Agreeable looks almost like a beige. The cool gray undertones will make SW Agreeable Gray look more beige.

SW Agreeable Gray Design Tip 2: Paint Finish

Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray Paint Color Select The Right Paint Color Sheen

Selecting the right paint finish for your home is as important as selecting the right paint color. The type of sheen you select depends on many variables such as lighting, the type of fixed elements you have, drywall, plaster walls, orange peel, kids, high traffic, pets, washability, etc.

I'm going to share with you two examples. For example, if you're thinking about painting the main interior walls with SW Agreeable Gray and don't receive much natural lighting, an Eggshell finish is the way to go. This will help reflect both natural and artificial lighting in your space. Example two is if you plan on painting SW Agreeable in a room that receives lots of natural lighting, but you have earthy beige carpets then a matte finish will create a polished look. A matte finish will pair well with the muted earthy carpets and tone down all the natural lighting you receive in that room.
